Why Connection is the Cornerstone of Conscious Leadership
In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, it’s easy to get caught up in the relentless pursuit of goals and deadlines. But what if the key to authentic leadership success isn’t about crossing items off your to-do list but rather about fostering genuine human connections? At Conscious Leaders Quest, we believe that the power of connection is not just important—it’s the foundational pillar of conscious leadership and the first step in the journey of a lifetime.
A Paradigm Shift: From “Getting Things Done” to “Advancing Relationships”
In 2021, I had the opportunity to help design and facilitate an online experience for Conscious Capitalism. At one point, there was the potential for some disagreement over an event speaker. While preparing for a meeting with Alexander McCobin, then CEO of Conscious Capitalism, I received invaluable advice from my late friend and mentor, Dr. Danny Friedland. As I rattled off my agenda and list of things to accomplish, Danny stopped me in my tracks with a profound insight:
“The purpose of the meeting isn’t to get things done; it’s to advance the relationship in which the work can get done!”
This insight was a wake-up call and has changed how I lead. During my meeting with Alexander, I focused on our relationship. What I anticipated as potential conflict melted away, and we collectively created an impactful experience – connected and aligned.
Reflecting on past experiences, I realized that prioritizing tasks over the power of connection often led to:
- Strained relationships requiring later mending.
- Flawed work due to rushing, which a connected team could have prevented.
- Missed opportunities for innovation that arise from deeper relationships.
This paradigm shift taught me that by prioritizing connection, we not only accomplish our goals but also create an environment for sustainable success and innovation, avoiding waste and rework in the process.
The Science Behind Connection in Leadership
Research consistently shows that prioritizing the power of connection yields tangible benefits:
1. Enhanced Collaboration and Innovation: Connected teams are more likely to share ideas and take creative risks.
2. Improved Mental Health: Strong interpersonal relationships reduce stress and prevent burnout.
3. Increased Employee Engagement: Connected employees show higher productivity and lower turnover rates.
4. Trust and Psychological Safety: Connection fosters an environment where team members feel safe to express themselves authentically.
Practical Steps to Foster Connection
Four steps to unlock the power of connection and transform your leadership:
1. Ask Purpose-Driven Questions: Engage your team with questions that go beyond the surface, exploring their motivations and aspirations. Michael Bungay Stainer’s book, The Coaching Habit, is a great resource.
2. Create Space for Reflection: Allow time for team members to process and internalize experiences and learnings.
3. Amplify All Voices: Ensure that every team member feels heard and valued, regardless of their position.
4. Hire for Connection: Build a team of individuals with whom you’re genuinely excited to connect and grow.
My father, Lloyd Hill, an accomplished leader and CEO, once told me, “Don’t ever hire anyone that you would not want to have over for dinner.” For the most part, I lived by this rule. Let’s face it: Connection often happens around a meal and a table, so let’s invite those to the table with whom we are eager to create a genuine connection.
The CLQ Approach: Connection as a Pillar
Connection forms the first and primary pillar of our Conscious Leaders Quest framework. We believe that by prioritizing relationships, leaders can create an environment where:
– Trust flourishes naturally
– Innovation becomes second nature
– Challenges are met with collective resilience
– Individual and organizational growth align seamlessly
Reframing Leadership Success
As leaders, it’s time to shift our focus. Instead of asking, “What did we accomplish today?” Let’s ask, “How did we strengthen our connections today?” By viewing our interactions through the lens of relationship-building, we unlock the true potential of our teams and organizations.
Remember, the most impactful work happens not in isolation, but in the context of strong, meaningful connections. As you embark on your authentic leadership journey, challenge yourself to prioritize connection.
It’s not just about getting things done—it’s about creating an environment where exceptional things can happen.
At Conscious Leaders Quest, we’re committed to helping leaders discover the best versions of themselves so they can cultivate the same in those they impact. By embracing the power of connection as our primary pillar, we’re not just changing how we lead—we’re transforming the very fabric of our organizations and the world they serve.
