Ripples of Change: How Ritual Sculpts Your Leadership

As leaders, we have the remarkable ability to envision the future we desire. However, through the transformative power of ritual, we can truly become the leaders we aspire to be. Let me share a personal story that illustrates this principle and its application to think about change and how ritual sculpts your leadership.

A Lesson from the Pool

Thirty years ago, as a high school swimmer, I had a singular goal: to win the state championship in the 100-yard butterfly before graduating. This wasn’t just a fleeting ambition; it was an all-consuming vision that permeated every aspect of my life.

A coach of mine introduced us to visioning exercises where we imagined every detail of our races—from stepping onto the pool deck to touching the wall at the finish. My father took this a step further, creating cassette tapes I would listen to nightly before sleep. These weren’t mere recordings; they were the soundtrack to my future success.

The power of this practice was profound. I can still vividly recall the natatorium—the scent of chlorine, the nervous energy before a race, and the unwavering confidence that I would emerge victorious. This wasn’t just daydreaming; it was a ritual that aligned my mind, body, and spirit with my mission.

The result? In my senior year, I won that race and set a state record. Three decades later, the pride and gratitude for the physical and mental preparation still resonate deeply.

From the Pool to Organizational Leadership

So, what does my high school swimming experience have to do with leadership today? Everything.

As leaders, we have the power to envision our future selves—the leaders we aspire to be, the positive impact we want to have on others, and the inspiration we aim to provide. Just as I visualized every stroke of that championship race, we can and should envision every aspect of our leadership journey.

Creating Your Leadership Vision Ritual

Here’s how you can apply this principle to your leadership development:

  1. Create the Future: Vividly imagine your desired future as a leader. Write down every detail—what it looks like, feels like, even smells like. Who’s around you? What’s happening? How does your body feel?
  2. Create Time: Establish a daily ritual to immerse yourself in this vision. It might be before sleep, upon waking, or as part of your meditation practice.
  3. Create Space: Designate a physical space for this ritual. It could be as simple as a specific chair or as elaborate as a dedicated room. The key is consistency.
  4. Create Allowing: Understand that this process may take months or even years. Enjoy the journey and let go of rigid expectations about the result. Ritual sculps your leadership – be open to the possibility.
  5. Create Skills: Identify and develop the skills you’ll need to realize your vision. As I honed my butterfly technique, you’ll need to cultivate specific leadership competencies.
  6. Create Possibility: Remember, this is an ongoing journey. As you reach one version of your envisioned self, you’ll discover new horizons to explore.

The Ritual Difference

It’s crucial to understand that ritual is not the same as habit. We perform habits without thought, often on autopilot. Rituals, on the other hand, are intentional practices that we engage in with the express purpose of allowing ourselves to be changed. They open us up to future possibilities and the potential of becoming better versions of ourselves.

Your Leadership Metamorphosis Starts Now

I challenge you to sit down and write out every detail of the leader you aspire to be. How do you look? How do you feel? How do people respond to you? What impact are you making?

Acknowledge that ritual sculpts leadership – the key is to accept and be open to change and re-sculpting by your vision and journey.

Envision the leader you want to be celebrating nine months from now. What does this mean for you as a leader, a human, and a family member?

By creating a ritual around this vision—consistently revisiting and immersing yourself in it—you’re not just dreaming; you’re actively shaping your future leadership reality.

Remember, the most powerful tool at your disposal is your ability to envision and embody your future self. Through ritual, you can bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, becoming the leader you’ve always known you could be.

Ritual sculpts your leadership. The future of your team, community, family, and our world depends on it.
